Setting up my blog website properly

The last couple of blog posts have been short ones, and fairly spread out. The reason for this is I have been setting up my blog website properly. For those that are interested, I will explain what I mean by that. Whether you are a blogger yourself, you are interested in starting your own blog, or if you are just interested in what creating your own blog involves.

As with most things, a lot of work goes into producing a finished blog post. To be honest, there’s a lot more work involved than I realised when I first had the idea to do this. Today I’m just going to be looking at the website side of things. But there is also the social media side, including Pinterest. Interacting with other bloggers, guest posts and a whole load of other stuff that I’m still a novice at.

Setting up my blog website properly

When I started this blog, I just dived in head first. Mainly because I’d been thinking about doing it for a long time, and I knew I just needed to get it started. Otherwise it would remain just an idea forever. To be perfectly honest I didn’t really know what I was doing. I used https://www.wpbeginner.com/ to help me set up my website. All the basics of what I needed were in place thanks to their help, but I didn’t really know how to use everything properly.

I’ve learnt a lot as I’ve gone along, with a bit of trial and error by myself. But also learning from the blogging community, there’s lots of great people out there giving great advice out for free. Then if you want to go real in depth there are lots of courses you can take, the best ones will cost you some money. If you want to blog as more than just a hobby, then you will need to invest.

Looking back at my old posts

It has been along time since I had done any serious writing, and even then I mostly wrote fiction. Writing for a blog is massively different, so when I looked back at my first couple months of posts. My first intention was improve the Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), which for those that don’t know is about how your website ranks with search engines like Google.

I soon realised more than that needed editing. The writing on those early posts wasn’t good at all. So I’ve been busy editing the posts, making them read better, adding to them and improving the SEO. This isn’t a waste of time just to make me feel better about my posts. The better your SEO ranking is, the more likely you are going to get organic website traffic to tour blog.

Also a good post can be re advertised on the social media platforms, especially on Pinterest which I wasn’t using when I started. And is now my biggest referral source, doubling what I get from Facebook and Twitter.

Already seeing the fruits of labour

I can say without any hesitation, that doing this has been worth it. Not only am I more proud of the content of my website, but I am seeing the positive results from it. Promoting the old posts on Pinterest has bought lots of visitors to my website.

I set a goal for June, to have 2000 sessions and 4000 page views on my website for the month. I was on around 1800 and 3600 for the last 30 days, when I set the goal in May. With the work I’ve put in on the website, and also Pinterest and engaging more with people on social media. June has started with a bang! I’ll share with you part of my analytic report from today.

Setting up my blog website properly

As you can see, the sessions and page views are both up considerably, and hitting the target I’ve set. I’m not going to hide my delight. If you follow me on Twitter, you might have seen my message of thanks. If not I am thanking you now. When I started this back in January I didn’t know if anyone would read. Those numbers won’t be breaking any blogging records, but they are staggering to me.

The future

Setting up my blog website properly has been very important to me, and I think I’m in pretty good shape now. I’m sure there is much more still to learn, but I’m so happy with where this is right now. The whole point of this was to advocate for autism awareness and acceptance, the more people I can reach the better. So I’ll keep working to spread this platform as far as I can. Thank you again to you all for supporting this blog, we all really appreciate it.

Looks like your started off your blog with a bit more of a plan than I did, even though you just jumped in head first. I didn’t even look at any source for ideas or help, I just trial and errored my way through it on my own, like a dumbass ha ha ha

I absolutely love that you went ahead and updated your old posts! For so many bloggers, websites are a way of sharing what we love with the world, and I think it is worth it to invest love and labor into what we write and how we share. 🙂

    Hope you nail your goals!

Thank you, it had been so long since I had done any serious writing when I started. That it took me a while to get into the swing of things. And then there’s the SEO….

I know what you mean about setting it up properly. I too just dove in and started writing. A few months ago I really say down and learned more on SEO and getting a layout and such to make my blog more appealing. I also saw a difference with just the little that I changed. Keep up the good work though!
